HONOLULU — In recognition of National Trails Day®, the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) O‘ahu Na Ala Hele Trail and Access Program will be hosting a community work day at Manoa Falls Trail on Saturday, June 1, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Manoa Falls Trail is one of 38 hiking trails managed for public recreational use by O‘ahu Na Ala Hele Trail and Access Program in DLNR’s Division of Forestry and Wildlife. Located a short distance from Honolulu, Manoa Falls Trail is a 1.6-mile roundtrip hike to a 70-foot waterfall.

Volunteers will help to improve one of O‘ahu’s busiest trails and make it a showcase for hiking in Hawai‘i. Tasks include trail graveling and widening, rock removal, top coating, making water diversions and step building. Volunteers may RSVP for this event by sending an e-mail to [email protected] with the following information: full name, e-mail, and contact number. Volunteers should bring water, lunch, shoes, and work gloves.

“Na Ala Hele deeply appreciates any public interest and desire to assist in the stewardship of trails in Hawai‘i,” said Aaron Lowe, O‘ahu Na Ala Hele trails specialist. “Trails require continuous attention to ensure a quality trail experience, safety of trail users, and proper management of natural and cultural resources. Na Ala Hele relies frequently on community volunteers for providing the essential person-power to conduct trail restoration or construction projects.”

American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day will bring together outdoor enthusiasts across the country on Saturday for the 21st annual celebration of America’s magnificent trail system and its countless supporters and volunteers. More than 2,000 nationwide events will take place including trail maintenance, hiking, paddling, biking, horseback riding, bird watching, running, trail celebrations and more.
