Your search found 2173 hits- 10/24/14 – BOARD APPROVES FIRST COMMUNITY BASED FISHERIES SUBSISTENCE AREA; Near Unanimous Support from Haena Community Results In Historic DecisionHONOLULU - The state Board of Land and Natural Resources (BLNR) today unanimously approved Hawaii's first ever Community Based Fisheries Subsistence Area (CBFSA) rule package for Haena on the island of Kauai. BLNR Chairperson William Alia said, "This is an historic action, following years of work by the Haena community in collaboration with Dept. of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) staff. This rules package gives the Haena hui an opportunity to protect its fisheries, based on traditional and customary practices. Native Hawaiians knew how to practice sustainability in order to feed their ohanas. This is strong recognition by government that we cannot do it alone and community-based management and buy-in is critical to sustaining Hawaii's precious natural resources for now and future generations."

- 10/07/13 – State Boating Division Holds Public Hearings On Administrative Rules For Commercial Operations“There has been a significant increase in the volume and types of recreational and commercial activities taking place in state waters since these boating rules were written and last revised nearly 20 years ago,” said William J. Aila, Jr., DLNR chairperson. “It’s time to update our rules so they are fair and equally applied to commercial operators operating everywhere in state waters. Since the use of our waters is changing, these rules allow us greater flexibility to adapt to those changes,” Aila said.
- 06/06/19-“DAWNING OF A NEW DAY FOR HĀʻENA” BLESSING PREPARES COMMUNITY FOR REOPENING OF STATE PARKS AND KŪHIŌ HIGHWAY(Hāʻena, Kaua‘i) – The clouds broke, and the rain stopped as 200 Hāʻena and Wainiha residents gathered next to a lo‘i in Hāʻena State Park on Kaua‘i’s north shore on Wednesday for a blessing called “Dawning of a New Day for Hāʻena.” The blessing, which included remarks from Governor David Ige, DLNR Chair Suzanne Case, local community members and a host of lawmakers and state leaders precedes the reopening of Kūhiō Highway and Hāʻena State Park, the gateway to the famed Kalalau Trail in the Nāpali Coast State Wilderness Park.

- 02/2/24 – KEALAKEKUA COMMUNITY-LED CORAL RESTORATION PROJECT AIMS TO ACCELERATE REEF GROWTH AND RECOVERY(KEALAKEKUA BAY, HAWAI‘I ISLAND) - The Hawai‘i Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) took part in a second collaborative coral restoration project today with Hawaiian cultural practices and protocols in the waters of Kealakekua Bay, on the Kona side of Hawai‘i Island. Kanu Ko‘a is the name of a community-led project integrating Hawaiian culture, the local community, and the science of coral restoration, and the ceremony emphasized ‘ohana (family) and relationships with ko‘a (corals).
