RESCUE OF NEWELL’S SHEARWATER CHICK DEMONSTRATES CHALLENGES

A tiny Newell’s Shearwater chick, rescued from the Hono o Na Pali Natural Area Reserve on Kaua‘i, in late August, is thriving and doing well. The project manager of the Kaua‘i Endangered Seabird Project says he’s never seen something like this happen before.  Typically chicks are preyed on by feral cats or rats.  This chick’s survival is a bright spot in the otherwise dire situation for three species of endangered seabirds on Kaua‘i. Their plight will be chronicled in the latest DLNR & YOU television special, airing on KFVE-TV in Honolulu on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016 at 6:30 p.m.
