With the help of the Legislature and public support, DLNR is able to continue “The Rain Follows the Forest” watershed initiative and increase forest protection throughout the state.
The Governor’s budget proposed in House Bill 1700 and Senate Bill 2815 requests an additional $3.5 million in general funds and $5 million in capitol improvement project funding for Fiscal Year 2015. The request includes an additional $1 million for invasive species control.
The following are a few of the additional bills that relate to watersheds and the control of invasive species that affect watersheds:
- SB2511/HB2070 - RELATING TO WATERSHED PROTECTION. This proposed bill establishes a watershed initiative program in DLNR, subjects program employees to the civil service laws, and appropriates funds for FY 2014-2015.
- SB2062 - RELATING TO CONSERVATION. This proposed bill appropriates funds to the Natural Area Reserve Fund for watershed protection.
- SB2343/HB1716 - Appropriates funds to the Hawaii Invasive Species Council for invasive species prevention, control, outreach, research, and planning.
