- 02/28/19-HA‘ENA STATE PARK PROVIDES SILVER LINING TO HISTORIC APRIL ’18 FLOODING(Hā‘ena State Park, Kaua‘i) – Opening is totally dependent on the repair and restoration of Kūhiō Highway, the only road to Kaua‘i’s north shore, and completion of the intense work that is underway at Hā‘ena State Park, which was also heavily damaged during last April’s world-record rain storm.
- 02/27/19-WORK SET TO CLEAR THE MOUTH OF THE WAIMEA RIVER (Waimea) - In an effort to restore the Waimea River’s natural discharge into the ocean, crews plan to remove 15,000 cubic yards of sand from the existing river mouth and restore its natural depth. DLNR is hosting a public information meeting on Wednesday March 6, 2019, to provide a brief overview of the planned construction activities. It is scheduled from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Waimea Neighborhood Center located at 4556 Makeke Road in Waimea.
- 02/26/19-INTRODUCED INVASIVE MULLET MAY OUTPACE NATIVE ‘AMA ’AMA(Hilo) - After seeing schools of pua ʻamaʻama (juvenile mullet) swim by in a muliwai (estuary) or a fishpond you may think that all is well. Unfortunately, you are likely looking at an invasive mullet, especially if it’s less than eight inches long.
- 02/26/19-DONATION OF IRREPLACEABLE HABITAT PROTECTS KAʻENA COASTLINE(Honolulu) – An irreplaceable parcel of coastal land on O‘ahu’s northwestern shore has been donated to DLNR to protect it forever. The Tom family owned the roughly ½ acre parcel for decades, and they partnered with the North Shore Community Land Trust to transfer it to the State. DLNR plans to designate this iconic coastal area as an extension of the Kaʻena Point Natural Area Reserve (NAR).
- 02/22/19-KAULANA MANU NATURE TRAIL TO CLOSE FOR PARKING AND RESTROOM CONSTRUCTION(HILO)–The Kaulana Manu Nature Trail (formerly known as Kipuka 21) will be closed beginning March 2, 2019 for construction of restroom and parking facilities. The construction is expected to be completed by September, with the trail reopening soon after.
- 02/21/19-PROPOSED FEES & RULES AMENDMENTS FOR STATE SMALL BOAT HARBORS(Honolulu) – People who use any of Hawai‘i’s small boat harbors, offshore moorings, landings or wharfs will have a chance to comment on new proposed fees and rules at a series of five public hearings to be held around the state in early March. The DLNR Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) which manages 16 harbors and other facilities last increased fees for utilities and facility use nearly 25 years ago.
- 02/19/19-HAWAI‘I CELEBRATES WORLD WETLANDS DAY(Honolulu) – 38 years ago an intergovernmental treaty was signed that provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. World Wetlands Day marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on February 2, 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar.
- 02/15/19-RECOGNITION FOR INVASIVE SPECIES ‘MOST VALUABLE PLAYERS’ (Honolulu) – During a ceremony today at the Hawai‘i State Capitol, Governor David Ige proclaimed February as Hawai‘i Invasive Species Month. This long-standing recognition is intended to bring additional attention to the issue of invasive species. Simultaneously five individuals and four organizations were recognized by the Governor and legislative leaders as Hawai‘i Invasive Species Committee Most Valuable Players for 2019.
- 02/15/19-RAPID RESPONSE UNDERWAY TO STOP TINY, INVASIVE INSECT (Honolulu) – When Daniel Kapalikūokalani-Maile posted on Facebook last November that something was killing native naio trees in the Kapalama/Kalihi area, it prompted a rapid response from state and federal agencies and organizations.
- 02/13/19-INFORMATIONAL MEETING SCHEDULED NEXT WEEK ON KAHULUI HARBOR FISHERIES MANAGEMENT AREA(Kahului) –The DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) is hosting a upcoming meeting on Wednesday February 20, 2019 from 5:00-7:00pm at Lihikai Elementary School on 335 South Papa Avenue in Kahului.
