Wildfire Awareness Month
May 1

Wildfire Awareness Month in Hawaiʻi is observed every May to raise public awareness about the growing threat of wildfires and to encourage community preparedness and prevention. It’s a collaborative effort among state agencies, federal partners, nonprofits, and local communities working together to reduce wildfire risk across the islands.
DLNR Forestry & Wildlife prevents fires through building firebreaks, restoring forests, and raising awareness about fire prevention. Learn about how we respond to wildfires on our Wildfire Management pages. You can also learn about how to be pono with fire from our mascot, Pono the Nēnē.
We also have tips for Firewise landscaping, and educational materials from our partner Hawaiʻi Wildfire Management Organization.
