World Environment Day

June 5

A rainbow over Hawaiian mountains

World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5 and is the United Nations’ primary day for encouraging global awareness and action to protect the environment. The holiday was first celebrated in 1973.

In Hawaiʻi, our environment is fundamental to our way of life. You can celebrate World Environment Day by learning about native ecosystems and species on our Forestry and Wildlife Education pages, where we have species profiles, conservation StoryMaps, Hawaiʻi nature videos, and virtual field trips to remote parts of Hawaiʻi.
