SUMMARY:Wailupe Volunteer Workday
DESCRIPTION:Sign Up: https://dlnr.ivolunteer.com/wailupe_20241222 \n  \nWe will be planting common natives important to our watershed such as Koa\, ʻŌhiʻa and Lama! \nThe Wailupe exclosure was built to protect habitat for our endemic Oʻahu ʻElepaio from feral ungulates. Wailupe valley is one of a few remaining lowland sites with ʻElepaio nests\, so it is vital we protect this forest ecosystem. \n  \nItʻs a moderate 45min-1 hour hike\, possibly carrying up to 10lbs of plants and a tool. You will need to be able to climb the 4ft ungulate fence that protects the site. Please understand that we strive as much as possible to create a safe environment to mālama ʻāina\, but working in the field always carries a level of risk\, particularly from heat and falls.  \n  \nMeet Time: 8:00 am \nWe will be meeting in Wailupe/Aina Haina valley at Wailupe Loop Trailhead at the end of Hao Street and return to the cars around 2:00 pm. \nWear/Bring: At least 3L of water\, a long-sleeve shirt\, gloves\, shoes\, and anything else you may need to be comfortable working in the forest for an extended time. Water\, sturdy shoes or boots\, sun protection and water. Jeans or other work pants recommended for invasive species removal. We will be planting and performing weed control using various handtools and chemical control. \n  \n**Please be aware of the noise level and respectful of residents at the entrance to the trail while gathering. Itʻs fine if you should need to leave early\, but you will have to hike back by yourself barring an emergency.  \n  \nSign Up: https://dlnr.ivolunteer.com/wailupe_20241222
