Look out! Itʻs seabird fallout seasonPosted on Sep 10, 2021
If you see a downed seabird, please call 808-974-4221.
Young seabirds attempt their first flight out to sea over the period from September through December. These birds use moonlight as their primary navigation, but may be distracted or disoriented by artificial lighting on homes or from streetlights. When this happens, young seabirds often become exhausted and end up on the ground where they are vulnerable to predators. You can help by turning off unnecessary lights during this season or to taking measures to scatter, sheild, or lower the intensity of outdoor light sources at night. If you happen to see a downed seabird for any reason, please assess the situation and secure the area. Wildlife staff can assist you in rescuing a bird and getting it to help.
