MAUI COMMUNITY FISHERIES ENFORCEMENT UNIT
COMBINES EDUCATION, OUTREACH AND ENFORCEMENT
WHAT: Now entering its fourth year of operations, the North Maui Community Fisheries Enforcement Unit (CFEU) patrols a 17 mile stretch of coastline, focusing on fishing violations by emphasizing education and outreach. The team of three DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources (DOCARE) officers have been able to shift their attention from pure rules enforcement and writing citations, to personal one-on-one contact with fishers. A reduction in the numbers and types of violations provide evidence of the success of this change in focus. DLNR has requested expansion of this program model statewide.
WHEN: Thursday, August 25, 2016, 11 a.m.
WHERE: DLNR, 1151 Punchbowl Street, Honolulu (first floor makai breezeway)
WHO: Kekoa Kaluhiwa, DLNR First Deputy
Jason Redulla, Acting DOCARE Enforcement Chief
WHY: This is the fourth of 19 daily DLNR & YOU news conferences associated with the IUCN World Conservation Congress Hawai’i 2016, Sept. 1st-10th. Complete media packages with HD Video, photographs, and a video news release will be available.
