ENDANGERED FOREST BIRDS OF HAWAII

WHAT:  The third “DLNR and YOU” television special, scheduled for broadcast in late 2016, documents the plight of and recovery efforts for several critically endangered forest birds. On Kauai, where the situation is particularly dire, three critically endangered species each number fewer than 1000 individuals. Conservation efforts for these species have included collection of eggs from nests in the wild to build captive populations, control of non-native rodents that prey on nesting birds and eggs, large-scale habitat restoration such as fencing and weed control, coupled with research and management to address the threat of introduced avian diseases.  The hope is that these efforts will eventually allow these species to flourish in the wild.
