MEDIA ADVISORY

MALAMA THE NAPALI COAST STATE WILDERNESS PARK

WHAT:    A concerted effort by the DLNR Divisions of State Parks and Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) over the past 8-9 months has resulted in more than 100 citations to illegal campers and transportation operators. Over the course of many years, illegal camps have resulted in despoiling what is considered one of Hawaii’s most iconic and widely photographed outdoor locales.  The result of enforcement and clean-up efforts can be seen as state park crews are airlifting much less rubbish out of the area than before, large illegal camps set up by unpermitted tour operators have not returned, and permitted campers are reporting a much “truer” wilderness experience.
