What to Expect:

  • Weather could be sunny and hot, or wet and quite cold. Be ready for all these types of conditions.
  • The terrain is rough and 4-wheel drive vehicles are a must.
  • Typically, for day trips, we will be meeting at Kilohana Hunting Station at 8 am and go over protocols for the day and head up to the planting sites. Expect to leave work site by 3:30 pm.
  •  For camp overs, the first day will be spent learning about the high-elevation dry forest.  The other full days will be spent planting native plants and collecting native seeds if available.

Next Steps:

  • Register below for the trip to reserve your spot. (hurry, limited spaces are filling up quickly!)
  • We’ll then respond to confirm your participation (please allow us time to process all responses)
  • Be sure everyone in your party carefully reads through the Volunteer Packet
  • Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Please fill out the registration form below for our upcoming Volunteer Days.

If you do not see an active registration form, this is because there are no events available at the moment. Please return at another time and keep an eye out for email notifications. Mahalo!

Volunteer Contract Agreement

As a volunteer for the Mauna Kea Forest Restoration Project, you understand and agree to the following:

  • By registering for a volunteer outing, plants, supplies, and logistics have been ordered and planned based on your attendance.
  • You understand that canceling your participation in a volunteer outing can result of cancellation of the entire trip and therefore the restoration work being planned for that outing. MKFRP will then fall short of its restoration objectives.
  • This is a group project and you will be working together with other volunteers and staff.
  • You are responsible for communicating this contract, the Volunteer Packet, and other information with others in your party.
  • If accompanying minors, you are responsible for all their actions and work ethic.
  • You are responsible for bringing appropriate work attire and if camping, sleep attire, and warm sleeping equipment.
  • All volunteers and staff share the central cabin and kitchen. (if camping)
  • Central cabin and kitchen shall remain clean and organized to respect others use of the area. (if camping)
  • The individual A-frame sleeping huts at Pu‘u Mali are personal and private spaces and are to be respected as such. (if camping)
  • If you are driving yourself, you must have a dependable 4-wheel drive vehicle. (there are no mechanic services or supplies)
  • You will abide by the conditions laid out in the Volunteer Position Description and Liability Waiver.
