ADDITIONAL PEAK SEASON CAMPING PERMITS FOR NAPALI COAST STATE WILDERNESS PARK WILL NOT BE ISSUED DUE TO FLOOD DAMAGE

Posted on Apr 13, 2018

UPDATE 4/16/18 – DUE TO THE FLOOD DAMAGE AND INDEFINITE CLOSURE OF THE KALALAU TRAIL, WE WILL NOT BE ISSUING ADDITIONAL PEAK SEASON PERMITS PENDING A DAMAGE ASSESSMENT AND ESTIMATES FOR ROAD AND PARK ACCESS BEING RE-ESTABLISHED.  WE APPRECIATE YOUR UNDERSTANDING AS THE NORTH SHORE RECOVERY EFFORTS CONTINUE.

Peak Season Permits will be available 28 days in advance for May 15-October 31, 2018.

Following recent successes in both enforcement and management efforts that have substantially reduced the number of illegal campers, the DLNR Division of State Parks will reinstitute the allowance of additional overnight camping permits for the popular Kalalau Trail, within the Nāpali Coast State Wilderness Park, Kaua‘i.

Twenty additional nightly permits will be available between May 15-October 31, 2018, when weather and surf conditions are typically calmer.  In keeping with previous policy to provide an opportunity for local residents to enjoy this world-renowned experience, permits will be issued first to walk-in applicants at the the Līhu‘e State Parks office 28 days in advance of the available dates.  On the following day, any remaining permits will be available to anyone via DLNR’s online permit reservation system.

The first day these peak season permits will be available to walk-in applicants is Tuesday, April 17, for camping beginning May 15.  Permits can be obtained for a maximum of five nights, and a maximum of four people.  Permit issuance hours for the Lihu’e office are from 8 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

Additional Details:

On April 17, permits will be available to walk-in applicants for a check-in date of May 15, 2018 in the Lihu’e, Kaua’i office beginning at 8 am.

Peak season permits show up online as a separate camp area, “Napali Coast SWP PEAK 2018”.  Regular season permits are issued under “Napali Coast State Wilderness Park”

Permit issuance will conform to the following release schedule:
