Sand Island State Recreation Area (SRA) Historic Properties Treatment Project (HPTP)

Posted on Nov 7, 2025

Project Description (UPDATE 12/18/25)

The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), through its Division of State Parks (DSP), is launching the Sand Island State Recreation Area (SRA) Historic Properties Treatment Project (HPTP) to address the condition of five aging World War II–era historic structures that require community consideration for their future. These historic structures have weathered over time, which has created potential safety concerns and placed their historic character at risk. This project seeks to assess their condition and gather community input to help determine the most appropriate next steps.

G70, under the direction of DSP, will lead the planning and outreach effort to work with the community in determining the future of these structures. Initial options under consideration include preservation, demolition, restoration to their World War II condition, adaptive reuse, or relocation.

The project will include a focused public outreach process to engage park users, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders. This collaborative approach is designed to guide decisions about the historic structures in a way that reflects the community’s values, cultural connections, and vision for Sand Island.

Upcoming opportunities for participation include:

Public Meeting 1: Wednesday, December 3, 2025 6–8 PM

  • Introduction, Background, Issues, and Preliminary Ideas

Public Meeting 2: Wednesday, December 17, 2025 6–8 PM

  • Present Conceptual Design for feedback

Public Meeting 3: Wednesday, January 14, 2026 6–8 PM

The Sand Island SAR HPTP engagement will result in a conceptual plan for the historic structures to be approved by DLNR by December 2025. Implementation is expected to commence in summer of 2026.
