Outreach Activities


Out-planting

 

Goal: To allow the community and visitors to connect with the mauna. Out-planting provides the opportunity to help our restoration team with fire management, creating new forest, creating future forest, and providing habitat/ food sources for Palila.

Requirements: Must be able to place plants in pre-made holes by staff as shown through demonstration. Elevation can range between 6,000 feet to above 9,000 feet (See info. above for out-planting sites).

Duration: Out-planting days typically run from 8am-3pm.

 


Seed Collecting

 

Goal: To allow the community and visitors to learn about native plants and how to collect viable seeds. This is one of the many steps these seeds experience before they germinate, grow, and return to Maunakea.

Requirements: Must be able to identify target plant for the day. Elevation will be based on seed/fruit availability (See info. above for out-planting sites).

Duration: Seed collecting days typically run from 8am-3pm.

 

 


Seed Processing

 

Goal: To allow the community and visitors to learn about native plants and how to process them. This is one of the many steps these seeds experience before they germinate, grow, and return to Maunakea.

Requirements: Must be able to follow instructions demonstrated by staff on how to properly remove the seed. Techniques will range based on seed type.

Duration: Seed processing days typically run from 8am-3pm.

 

 


Bird & Plant ID Workshops

 

Goal: To allow the community and visitors to learn about native manu (birds) and plants. Whether you’re a rookie or a pro, our goal is to provide an opportunity to learn and connect with the native forests.

Requirements: Must be able to hike along trails and provide binoculars for themselves.

Location: Workshops can be held at Palila Disscovery Trail, Puʻu Oʻo Trail, and Kaulana Manu Trail. All trails are maintained by Nā Ala Hele but can have loose rocks present.

Duration: Workshops typically run from 8am-2pm.

 


Waimea State Tree Nursery Visits

Goal: To allow the community and visitors to prepare plants for the following out-planting seasons. This is one of the many steps essential to a successful plant returns to Maunakea. Tasks can include transplanting, weeding, sizing, sorting, and any other task needed by the nursery staff.

Requirements: Must be able to follow instructions demonstrated by staff on how to properly transplant, weed, or size plants.

Duration: Nursery days typically run from 8am-3pm.
