Background:

Agriculture systems are complex as is the stewardship of natural resources.  Concerns of land use, water rights, technology, sustainability, food safety and systems of scale are regularly discussed within our communities here in Hawaii.  This three-day workshop explores the science of agriculture and soil and water conservation through place based learning at three sites across O‘ahu: Kahumana Organic Farm in Waianae, DuPont Pioneer in Waialua, and The Halawa Xeriscape Garden in Halawa.

“Pilina” is a Hawaiian word that means unity and connectedness.  The Hawaii Environmental Education Alliance (HEEA) hosts Pilina professional development programs across the state with the aim to strengthen systems of support for students and teacher success in our community.

Through this course teachers will experience a variety of standards-aligned curricula, community partners/organizations, field-trip sites, and how to successfully integrate materials and experiences into lesson plans.  PDE3 Credits available to those who complete a portfolio.

Sandy Webb and Sam Vaughs, science teachers at Mililani High School, will serve as our Pilina leads and bring decades of experience engaging DOE youth in natural resource management and agriculture.

Event host, the West O‘ahu Soil and Water Conservation District, engages landowners and land managers in stewardship, or the wise use of our natural resources through best management practices.  In addition to exploring critical thinking in relation to Hawaii’s diverse Ag Systems, we will explore the concept of stewardship.

The goal of this workshop is to help teachers support students in making informed decision about complex environmental issues related to agriculture, soil, and water.

We look forward to you joining us.  Please contact Michelle Gorham with any questions – [email protected] or 808.729.1676
