PAVING WORK REQUIRES CLOSURE AT PUU UALAKAA STATE WAYSIDE

HONOLULU — The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of State Parks will temporarily close Puu Ualakaa State Wayside from Jan. 22 through Feb. 1, 2013, for work to improve the park access road and parking areas. While the park is projected to reopen on Saturday, Feb. 2, rain delays may require an additional week’s closure.

The contractor is Site Engineering Inc., which will remove the existing asphalt, repave the entry roadway and picnic and lookout parking areas, and stripe the parking stalls. The project cost is $213,737.

Project funding has been provided by the transient accommodations tax administered by the Hawaii Tourism Authority.

“We appreciate the support that HTA has provided in the improvement of our park facilities,” said William Aila, Jr., DLNR.

The wayside has a scenic lookout with a sweeping view of southern Oahu from Diamond Head to Pearl Harbor, including Honolulu and Manoa Valley. There are picnic shelters and a comfort station available at the park. It also contains the trailhead for the Ualakaa Loop Trail, a 1-mile loop trail.
