MAUI NA ALA HELE CELEBRATES NATIONAL TRAILS DAY
WITH VOLUNTEER WORKDAY ON NEW MOUNTAIN
BIKE TRAIL IN MAKAWAO FOREST RESERVE
KAHULUI — In a belated celebration of National Trails Day, the Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Na Ala Hele Trails and Access Program is holding a volunteer workday in the Makawao Forest Reserve on Saturday, July 13, 2013.
A new mountain biking trail is being designed and constructed by the Na Ala Hele Trail Crew in cooperation with the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) and the Maui Mountain Biking Coalition. The new trail is a flow trail that will generally parallel the existing multi-use trail for approximately 2 miles along the eastern leg of the Kahakapao Loop Trail.
Interested individuals are encouraged to meet in the gravel parking lot of the Kahakapao Loop Trail at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 13, 2013. Work will consist of digging, raking, and putting finishing touches on sections of the new trail.
Volunteers must wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes. Weather conditions can vary from hot and dry to windy and rainy, so please be prepared for changing conditions. Dogs are not allowed in the work area. Volunteers are encouraged to bring plenty of water, lunch, and any other items and medications that they require. For more information, please call Kevin Cooney at (808) 873-3509.
