DLNR CLOSES KAENA POINT STATE PARK
KEAWAULA BEACH DUE TO HIGH WAVE DANGER

HONOLULU — The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will close the gate at the Keawaula beach section of Kaena Point State Park this afternoon for public safety, following communications with City and County of Honolulu Department of Emergency Management and Ocean Safety lifeguards.

Large waves between 20 to 30 feet high are forecast to reach this section of Oahu’s leeward coast starting after midnight and to dawn. As a precautionary measure for the safety of the public, the lifeguards will help to assure that park users leave the area by sundown this evening.

“If the waves are as big as projected, they could wash over the low-lying sections of Kaena Point State Park road, trapping people on the other side, and endangering anyone in the area,” said Dan Quinn, State Parks administrator. “Lifeguards will evaluate the situation tomorrow morning and advise State Parks on whether the area should remain closed,” he said.

Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement are warning beach goers to stay away from low-lying areas including Kaena Point State park on both the Waianae and Mokuleia coasts.

DLNR also advises boat owners to take necessary precautions, and ensure that their vessels are securely moored.
