RECREATION AREA IN DECEMBER 2014
HONOLULU — The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of State Parks will begin work on improvements at the Kahuku section of the Malaekahana State Recreation Area on December 1, 2014, that will include demolition of existing cabins and structures.
The Kahuku park section has been closed since Friday, November 21, 2014, until further notice, due to tree hazard concerns in the park. State Parks will address the tree hazards under a separate project during the park’s closure.
The demolition project will dismantle and remove five former rental cabins, two security residences and one office structure, and empty and seal the decaying and environmentally obsolete cesspools in compliance with State regulations and requirements. These structures have deteriorated to an extent that for public safety, protection of the coastal resources and to improve the recreational experience, DLNR is acting to remove these structures from this park section. The project is expected to be completed in January 2015, or sooner as conditions allow.
Appropriate safety practices and measures will be implemented to ensure that project impacts are minimized. “We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding during this project as we address park improvements and implement measures to ensure the safety of our park users,” said Dan Quinn, State Parks Administrator.
The contractor is Integrated Construction, Inc., and project cost is $155,000. Funds were provided by the State of Hawaii through capital improvement funding.
