KOKE‘E:WAIMEA CANYON STATE PAR
 
DLNR TO BEGIN IMPROVEMENTS AT KOKEE/WAIMEA
CANYON STATE PARK COMPLEX IN DECEMBER 2014
 
 
LIHU‘E – The Department of Land and Natural Resources will making improvements at Koke‘e and Waimea Canyon State Parks, starting December 4, 2014. Work includes replacement of water tanks servicing the comfort stations at the Pu‘u Hinahina and Waimea Canyon lookouts in the Waimea Canyon State Park> There will also be roadway repairs and drainage improvements on Koke‘e Road and repaving of the camping parking area in Koke‘e State Park.  The project is expected to be completed by the end of February 2015.

The work will start at the Pu‘u Hinahina lookout and Koke‘e State Park camping area in December, and proceed to the Waimea Canyon lookout and Koke‘e road in January.

Project impacts to the public will include closure of portions of the Waimea Canyon lookout for transporting and placement of the water tank, The comfort stations at the Pu‘u Hinahina and Waimea Canyon lookouts may be temporarily closed when the water tanks are connected, while portable toilets will be provided for the interim, as needed. and lane closures of portions of Koke‘e road during repair and drainage improvements.  

 Signage and traffic control measures will be implemented during work on Koke‘e road.  

“We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding during this project as the repairs and improvements allow us to catch-up with much needed park improvements,” said Dan Quinn, State Parks administrator.

The contractor is Goodfellow Brothers Inc., and project cost for the roadway and parking repair and improvements was $982,000; the water tanks were obtained under another project with the contractor.  Funds were provided by the State of Hawai‘i through capital improvement project funding.
