TO CLOSE TOMORROW
MAKENA, MAUI — The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Division of State Parks will close the Pu‘u Olai area (Little Beach) and a portion of Makena Beach State Park tomorrow February 18, while DLNR staff and military ordnance experts investigate a potential hazardous situation fronting the beach at Pu‘u Olai.
Remnants of detonation wire have become exposed, which may pose a public safety hazard. “In an abundance of caution, we will close the park until we are certain there is no risk to the public,” said Curt Cottrell, State Parks assistant administrator.
The area will remain closed until further notice.
However, the parking area and beach closest to ‘Ahihi-Kina‘u Natural Area Reserve will remain open.
