Commercial kala fishery closed starting June 2, 2025

The 15,000 pound commercial Annual Catch Limit (ACL) for kala has been reached. To ensure that this limit for the 2024-2025 season is not exceeded further, the Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) is closing the statewide kala fishery on June 2, 2025.

For Fishers
Please conclude all commercial kala fishing, transfer to dealers, and cash sales by June 2, 2025. After this time your commercial kala permit will no longer allow you to take or possess more than the statewide non-commercial kala bag limit until the season re-opens. You may continue to take kala for personal consumption while the commercial season is closed as long as non-commercial rules are followed.

For Dealers
Please conclude all purchases of kala from fishers by June 2, 2025. After this time purchasing kala from fishers will no longer be allowed until the season is re-opened. Kala inventory on-hand following the closure of the season may be sold, but only after reporting the number of pieces in your possession to DAR. Please email your remaining kala inventory to [email protected] no later than June 3, 2025.

Commercial catch and sales of kala will re-open at the beginning of the 2025-2026 season on August 1, 2025. For fishers, please make sure that your CMLs and commercial kala fishing permits are renewed before resuming.

Mahalo for your cooperation.
