- 08/17/22 – HAWAI‘I ISLAND WILDFIRE DECLARED NEARLY CONTAINED(Waikōloa, Hawai‘i Island) – Just south of Waikōloa Village, the resort area, and mauka of Highway 190 near the Puu Lani Subdivision, a 17,000-acre wildfire has left a charred landscape. That’s 26.5-square-miles of burned land, that dozens of firefighters, supported by heavy equipment and air assets, have worked a week to extinguish. Today, they achieved 90 percent containment of the fire.
- 08/13/22 – LEILANI WILDFIRE NOW 50% CONTAINED(WAIKŌLOA, HAWAI‘I) – 42 firefighters are back on the lines today in their effort to control the Leilani wildfire that sparked on Wednesday and was initially fueled by carpets of dry fountain grass and strong, gusty winds.
- 08/12/22 – LEILANI WILDFIRE ACREAGE ESTIMATE REDUCED AFTER AERIAL MAPPING(Waikōloa, Hawai’i) – The size of the Leilani wildfire, now burning on Hawai‘i Island has been reduced to 16,400 acres, following formal aerial mapping today. The percentage of the fire contained remains at 30%.
- 08/12/22 – LEILANI WILDFIRE ACREAGE ESTIMATED AT 25,000(Waikoloa, Hawai’i) – Dozens of federal, state, and county firefighters are back on the lines this morning at the large Leilani wildfire.
- 08/12/22 – VIRTUAL EAST HONOLULU COMMUNITY WILDFIRE PROTECTION MEETING(HONOLULU) - Worried about what to do during a potential wildfire? People living and working in East Honolulu have two opportunities on August 16 to attend a virtual meeting to have wildfire concerns heard and to begin the development of a Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP).
- 08/11/22 – LEILANI WILDFIRE GROWS THOUSANDS OF ACRES OVERNIGHT(Waikoloa, Hawai’i) – A fast-moving, wind whipped wildfire on Hawai‘i Island has federal, state, and county firefighters preparing for a prolonged, intense firefight. Called the Leilani fire, Wednesday night it grew from an estimated 700-acres in size to 9,800 acres this afternoon.
- 08/06/22 – THIRD DAY OF KAIMANA MONK SEAL OVERWATCH AND NO ISSUES(HONOLULU) – The Hawaiian monk seal Rocky and her pup (PO8), spent most of this morning in the water. By late morning they’d moved back onto Kaimana Beach to rest, prompting volunteers from Hawaii Marine Animal Response (HMAR) to again change-up their cordon, with ropes and signs to keep people back.
- 08/04/22 – STATE LAW ENFORCEMENT AT KAIMANA BEACH WELCOMED BY MONK SEAL VOLUNTEERS(HONOLULU) – At dawn, about the only people at Kaimana Beach were folks from Hawai‘i Marine Animal Response (HMAR) and a couple of television crews. HMAR is the organization that mobilizes volunteers to watch over resting monk seals.
- 08/03/22 – DLNR LAW ENFORCEMENT ESTABLISHING A 50-YARD MONK SEAL CORDON(HONOLULU) – The DLNR Division of Conservation and Resource Enforcement (DOCARE) announced today it will be enforcing a 50-yard cordon around Hawaiian monk seal Rocky and her pup at Kaimana Beach beginning tomorrow morning. This is a government operation to protect public safety and the safety of the monk seals.
- 08/01/22 – APPLICATIONS FOR 2023 LĀNAʻI AXIS DEER SEASON OPEN SOON(HONOLULU) - Applications for the 2023 Lānaʻi Axis Deer hunting season will be available for purchase next month. The DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) will begin accepting applications Monday, August 15, 2022.
