- 10/27/22 – ADDITIONAL COMMUNITY INPUT AHEAD FOR PROPOSED MANTA VIEWING RULES(HONOLULU) – For nearly a decade, the DLNR Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) has grappled with amendments to Hawai‘i Administrative Rules (HAR) regarding commercial manta ray viewing operations at two locations in the West Hawai‘i Ocean Recreation Management Area (ORMA).
- 10/20/22 – GOVERNOR IGE PROCLAIMS THURSDAY AS “IMAGINE A DAY WITHOUT WATER”(HONOLULU) – Today, Governor David Ige declared “Imagine a Day Without Water.” It’s part of a national effort to raise awareness about the importance of water in our daily lives and to commit to ensuring a sustainable water future.
- 10/18/22 – KAUA‘I SCHOOL CHILDREN HELP RELEASE RESCUED ENDANGERED SHEARWATERS(LIHU'E) – ‘A‘o (Newell’s Shearwater) are the beneficiaries of a tradition on Kaua‘i. On Monday, students from Island School released two fledgling ‘A‘o, during the annual Ho‘opomaika‘i ‘ia na Manu ‘A‘o , meaning a cultural release of the native Newell’s Shearwater, at Lydgate Park. The annual affair is organized by the Kaua‘i Endangered Seabird Recovery Project (KESRP) and the Save Our Shearwaters (SOS) Program, both of which are supported by DLNR.
- 10/18/22 – DOWN WITH THE OLD AND UP WITH THE NEW(HONOLULU) – This morning, a team of workers from the DLNR Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) removed a pair of faded signs from a post at the Maunalua Bay boat ramp. They then began putting up a pair of new signs – reminders of the important role of mano (sharks) in native Hawaiian culture, ocean health, and resiliency.
- 10/14/22 – ADDRESSING HOMELESSNESS ON PUBLIC TRUST LANDS(Sand Island State Recreation Area, Honolulu) – The shoreline on the western side of O‘ahu’s only urban state park, is intended to be a place for residents and visitors to fish and swim and participate in recreational pursuits.
- 10/14/22 – LANA’I RESIDENT CITED FOR POSSESSION OF AN ILLEGAL THROW NET(LANA‘I CITY) While patrolling the shoreline on the north side of Lana'i, a DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources (DOCARE) Officer observed 34-year-old Keao Soriano bending over a bucket near the water’s edge. Soriano looked in the officer’s direction and then attempted to hide the bucket before contacting the officer.
- 10/13/22 – MOSQUITO SURVEY TEAMS ON MAUI GIVE VOICE TO THE VOICELESS(Haiku, Maui) – Several times each week, staff from the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project (MFBRP) check mosquito traps in the rural residential areas along Maui’s north shore. Their goal is to catch as many male Southern house mosquitoes as they can.
- 10/09/22 – TWO HONOLULU MEN CITED FOR VIOLATIONS IN THE WAIKĪKĪ FISHERIES MANAGEMENT AREA(HONOLULU) – Following-up on a complaint, a pair of officers from the DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE), cited two Honolulu men, late Saturday, for prohibited activities in the Waikīkī Fisheries Management Area (FMA).
- 10/07/22 – FUNDING OPPORTUNITY FROM STATE LAND CONSERVATION FUND(HONOLULU) – The DLNR, through its Legacy Land Conservation Program, is now accepting applications for grants to acquire and preserve land that has natural, environmental, recreational, scenic, cultural, agricultural production, or historic value, including park and trail systems that provide access to such land. Approximately $5.9 million is expected to be available for awards during the current grant cycle.
- 10/04/22 – VIRTUAL HAWK WEEK PROVIDES EDUCATION & APPRECIATION FOR HAWAIIAN ‘IO(HILO) – Prompted by repeated injuries suffered by a single ‘Io (Hawaiian hawk), a collaboration of conservation agencies and non-profit organizations are holding the first-ever “Hawk Week,” October 9-15, 2022.
