- 6/25/25 – ʻALALĀ INCREASE RANGE OF NATURAL BEHAVIORS IN THE WILDKĪPAHULU FOREST RESERVE, MAUI, Hawai‘i – The five ʻalalā, or Hawaiian crows, released last November are demonstrating promising wild behaviors. ʻAlalā are the last remaining species of several native Hawaiian crows that once inhabited the islands.
- 6/17/25 – MUZZLELOADER/SHOTGUN HUNTING SEASON AT KAʻOHE GAME MANAGEMENT AREA OPENS JULY 3HILO, Hawai‘i – The Kaʻohe Game Management Area (GMA) on Hawai‘i Island will open to game mammal hunting with a muzzleloader or shotgun (with slug) on Thursday, July 3, 2025. The season will continue through Sunday, August 31, excluding August 27-28 when the area will be closed for ungulate management operations by DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) staff.
- 6/9/25 – HAWAIʻI ISLAND RESERVES TO TEMPORARILY CLOSE JULY 1-2 FOR ANIMAL CONTROL ACTIVITIESHILO, Hawaiʻi – Animal control activities targeting feral goats, feral sheep and mouflon/feral sheep hybrids are scheduled for July 1-2, 2025 on Hawaiʻi Island. The DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) will conduct the operations using ground-based and aerial methods.
- 6/4/25 – ‘OPIHI PICKER BANNED FROM PŪPŪKEA AFTER ILLEGAL COLLECTINGHONOLULU – Environmental Court Judge in Wahiawā yesterday barred 55-year-old Armando Posadas of ʻEwa Beach from entering the Pūpūkea Marine Life Conservation District (MLCD) on Oʻahu’s North Shore for six months. It may be the first time a violator had a “geographic restriction” added to a sentence.
- 6/3/25 – DRAMATIC VIDEO SHOWS DANGERS OF PLAY AT CHINA WALLS AND SPITTING CAVESHONOLULU – As the summer fun season heats up, a lot of young people and visitors will head toward the rocky shorelines and cliffs on the east side of Maunalua Bay for ocean play. So will first responders, to rescue them.
- 6/2/25 – INCIDENTS ON HAWAIʻI ISLAND SHED LIGHT ON HAWAIIAN HAWK ABUSEHILO, Hawaiʻi – Threats to Hawaiʻi’s endangered wildlife usually come in the form of habitat loss and degradation, disease, or predators. Recent incidents on Hawai‘i Island involving the ‘io, or Hawaiian hawk, shed light on another hazard: human interactions. Last month, a Mountain View community member found an emaciated ‘io on her property. It was missing the upper portion of its beak. This was reported to the Hawai‘i Wildlife Center (HWC) which contacted the DLNR Divisions of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) and Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW).
- 5/29/25 – CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS TO WAILOA CENTER ART EXCHANGE AND EXHIBITIONHILO, Hawai‘i – Wailoa Center and Hawai‘i Island Art Alliance (HIAA) are seeking submissions for the 15th Annual Abstract Only art exhibition, featuring an international exchange between Shanghai, China and Hawai‘i artists. Wailoa Center is under the DLNR Division of State Parks (DSP) and located within the Wailoa River State Recreation Area.
- 5/20/25 – ADDITIONAL TEMPORARY CLOSURES AT DIAMOND HEAD STATE MONUMENT IN JUNEHONOLULU – More full-day closures are forthcoming to Diamond Head State Monument (DHSM) next month. The DLNR Division of State Parks (DSP) announces park closures for ongoing rockfall mitigation work from June 17-20 and 24-27 at the popular O‘ahu landmark.
- 5/16/25 – VIRTUAL OPEN HOUSE TO UPDATE STATEWIDE TRAILS AND ACCESS PLANHONOLULU – Anyone who has hiked, biked or driven across state-managed land in Hawaiʻi has likely used a Nā Ala Hele trail or access road. The program, part of the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife, manages hundreds of miles of trails and access roads across the state. Nā Ala Hele is updating its program plan, originally created in 1991, and seeks community input.
- 5/12/25 – RESERVATIONS FOR KEANAKOLU BUNKHOUSE AND RANGER CABINS NOW OPEN DAILYHONOLULU – Starting today, booking a spot for your next camping adventure in the Hilo Forest Reserve just got easier. The DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) announces that the Keanakolu Bunkhouse and Ranger cabins are now available for camping reservations seven days a week.
