- 08/15/22 – FELLOWSHIPS ANNOUNCED FOR KAULUNANI FORESTRY PROGRAM(HONOLULU) – Are you a college student or recent graduate interested in exploring the role of trees in our communities? The Kaulunani Urban and Community Forestry Program invites applicants for its Tree Canopy Viewer Fellowship program.
- 08/08/22 – RECRUITS MUSTER FOR LARGEST ACADEMY FOR STATE CONSERVATION OFFICERS(HONOLULU) – By this time next year, if they all succeed, the DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) will have 42 additional conservation officers to beef up the ranks in all four branches of the agency: O‘ahu, Hawai‘i Island, Maui, and Kaua‘i.
- 08/05/22 – NEW NATURAL AREA RESERVE DESIGNATED IN SOUTH KONA(KONA) – A roughly 1,260-acre parcel in Waiea, on Hawai‘i island has been designated as part of the State Natural Area Reserve (NAR) System managed by the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW).
- 08/03/22 – MILOLIʻI FISHING VILLAGE BECOMES COMMUNITY-BASED SUBSISTENCE FISHING AREA(MILOLI‘I, KONA, HAWAI‘I ISLAND) – With the stroke of a pen, while dozens of community members watched, Governor David Ige on Tuesday signed administrative rules to make the coastline bordering this remote village the second Community-Based Subsistence Fishing Area (CBFSA) in the state.
- 7/29/2022 – POLIHALE STATE PARK TO REOPEN FOR OVERNIGHT CAMPING(HONOLULU) – Over two years after closing, due to COVID concerns and overuse and abuse issues, Polihale State Park will reopen to overnight camping beginning August 14, 2022. Reservations will be available online starting August 1 and may be made up to 90 days in advance.
- 7/25/2022 – WOMAN HURT BY MONK SEAL MOM AND PUP IN THE WRONG PLACE AT THE WRONG TIME(HONOLULU) – When the Hawaiian monk seal Rocky, and her pup encountered a 60-year-old California elementary school teacher, a State investigation shows she did nothing to provoke the incident and was not even aware the seals were in the water.
- 7/21/2022 – LEHUA ART SHOW: CALL FOR ART SUBMISSIONS(LĪHUʻE) – Calling all artists! Next month, DLNR is partnering with Island Conservation to host an art show focused on the natural beauty, native species, and powerful mana of Lehua Island. Entries will be displayed at the Kauaʻi Society of Artists (KSA) art gallery at Kukui Grove August 12-19. All entries must be submitted by Saturday, August 6. Artists of all ages and experience levels are encouraged to create and submit Lehua-inspired art.
- 7/21/2022 – NEW BOOT BRUSH STATIONS DEPLOYED IN THE FIGHT AGAINST RAPID ‘ŌHI‘A DEATH(HONOLULU) - Hawaiian Electric Co. (HECO) has stepped up to help reduce the spread of the Rapid ‘Ōhi‘a Death (ROD) disease on Oʻahu through the design, fabrication, and installation of a new style of boot brush station for trailheads. Sean Moura, Hawaiian Electric wildlife biologist, took an existing boot brush design and modified it to be more inviting and user-friendly.
- 7/20/2022 – STREAMLINED APPLICATION PROCESS FOR FISHPOND RESTORATION SEES SUCCESS(HONOLULU) - Seven years ago the DLNR Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands (OCCL) launched a streamlined application for loko i‘a (fishpond) repair and restoration as part of the Hoʻāla Loko Iʻa program. Since its beginning, 20 new fishpond restoration permits have been issued.
