- 10/11/24 – NEW VIDEOS EXPLORE CULTURAL PRACTICE WITH NATURAL RESOURCES(HONOLULU) – Our natural resources in Hawaiʻi are inextricably connected to the communities that rely upon and care for those resources. The “ʻIke Kaiāulu,” or “Community Knowledge,” video series, produced by education teams within the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) and Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR), seeks to tap into an understanding of this rich history of caring for 'āina and kai.
- 10/11/24 – DLNR TRANSFERS 34 HAWAI‘I ISLAND LEASES AND REVOCABLE PERMITS TO DOA(HONOLULU) – At its meeting today, the state Board of Land and Natural Resources (BLNR) approved transferring more than 7,000 acres of land on Hawai‘i Island from DLNR jurisdiction to the Hawai‘i Dept. of Agriculture (DOA).
- 10/11/24 – WAIMĀNALO HOMELESS SHELTER GETS NEW LEASE ON LIFE(HONOLULU) – Today, the state Board of Land and Natural Resources (BLNR) agreed to set aside nearly 11 acres of DLNR land in Waimānalo for a kauhale housing project.
- 10/10/24 – HIT AND RUN DRIVER KILLS NĒNĒ IN LILIʻUOKALANI PARK AND GARDENSA male nēnē, banded as 595, was killed while apparently crossing a road in Liliʻuokalani Park and Gardens off Banyan Drive early this morning.
- 10/10/24 – TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF VARIOUS DLNR-MANAGED LANDS FOR ANIMAL CONTROL ACTIVITIES(HILO) -- The DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) will conduct animal control activities for trapping mouflon/feral sheep hybrids; staff control and/or aerial shooting from helicopters for feral goats, feral sheep, mouflon and mouflon/feral sheep hybrids within Palila critical habitat in the Mauna Kea Forest Reserve (Unit A), Mauna Kea Ice Age Natural Area Reserve (Unit K), Palila Mitigation Lands, and the Kaʻohe Game Management Area (Unit G) on the island of Hawaiʻi.
- 10/9/24 – ʻALALĀ BEGIN JOURNEY BACK TO THE WILD ON MAUI(MAKAWAO, MAUI) –In a significant milestone for the conservation of Hawaiʻi’s native birds, five ʻalalā (Native Hawaiian crow) were transferred last week, from the Maui Bird Conservation Center (MBCC) to a temporary field aviary on the slopes of Haleakalā. This marks the beginning of their adaptation period before their eventual release into the wild. MBCC is operated by San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.
- 9/28/24 – EROSION IMPACTS ON OʻAHU’S NORTH SHORE(HONOLULU) – The DLNR and City and County of Honolulu Department of Planning and Permitting (DPP) are notifying neighborhood homeowners and the community of the potential risk to property, health and safety, based on recent events and the history of erosion in the area of Ke Nui Road on Oʻahu’s north shore.
- 9/25/24 – ADAPTIVE MANAGEMENT MEASURES IN EFFECT FOR HUNTING ON HAWAIʻI ISLAND(HILO, HAWAIʻI) – A temporary rule change will go into effect this Saturday, Sept. 27, 2024 for hunting at Puʻu Waʻawaʻa Forest Reserve (Unit F) and Puʻu Anahulu Game Management Area (Unit E) on Hawaiʻi Island. The rule change coincides with the opening of the hunting season for muzzleloaders and shotguns (with slug) and pertains to the makai areas of these hunting units.
- 9/25/24 – NEW TECHNOLOGY TO CURB INVASIVE COQUI ON OʻAHU(HONOLULU) – Invasive coqui frogs have been found at higher elevations than previous infestations on Oʻahu. The Department of Agriculture confirmed in June, following a report from a citizen, the distinctive chirp of the coqui roughly 200 meters below the summit of Kuliʻouʻou Ridge Trail on the leeward side of the mountains. Surveys were subsequently performed by the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), and the Oʻahu Invasive Species Committee (OISC).
- 9/24/24 – KAULUNANI PARTNERS GATHER TO CELEBRATE COMMUNITY FORESTRY(HONOLULU) – Community forestry efforts brought the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) Kaulunani program together with partnering educators, nonprofits, agency representatives, cultural practitioners and students at the UH West Oʻahu campus for an empowering, role-celebrating event.
