(Wailuku)–The DLNR Division of State Parks is hosting an open workshop meeting on Thursday March 14, 2019 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at the Velma McWayne Santos Community Center in Wailuku for attendees to discuss their insights, concerns and recommendations directly to project staff on improvements made to ʻIao Valley State Monument.

(Honolulu) – An open hearing will be held to receive testimony on the September 28, 2018 submittal of the Kawailoa Wind Power Draft Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) amendment. Kawailoa Wind, LLC currently operates a 30-turbine, 69-megawatt wind energy generation facility on agricultural lands in Kawailoa on the northern portion of the Island of O’ahu. The facility supplies electricity to Hawaiian Electric Company, Inc.

(Honolulu) – The Hawai‘i Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Commission (Climate Commission) at its regular quarterly meeting yesterday adopted a series of recommendations and finalized a mission statement to help guide Hawai‘i’s response to the impacts of climate change.

BLNR Chair Suzanne Case issued the following statement today about protesters at Friday’s Land Board meeting calling for Board Member Sam Gon’s resignation.

Circuit Court Judge Jeffrey Crabtree ruled today that, based upon a Hawaiʻi Supreme Court opinion issued on September 6, 2017, existing permits for use of fine mesh nets to catch aquatic life for aquarium purposes are illegal and invalid. Judge Crabtree also ordered the DLNR not to issue any new permits pending environmental review.

The State Commission on Water Resource Management (CWRM) will hold public hearings on proposed amendments to its administrative rules pertaining to water use, wells and stream diversion works. These proposed amendments will: increase the maximum fine amount from $1,000 to $5,000 for violations, consistent with the State Water Code; and increase the filing fee for well construction and pump installation from $25 to $300.

The public is invited to provide input on the future of State lands at Honolua Bay and Lipoa Point at a community open house on Wednesday, November 8, 2017. The State of Hawai‘i acquired these lands in 2014, following a tremendous effort by the community, guided by the Save Honolua Coalition, the State’s political leaders and others to prevent development of the agricultural lands surrounding Honolua Bay.

The Board of Land and Natural Resources (BLNR) at its regularly scheduled meeting today reviewed a proposed administrative enforcement action against Kona resident Sean Pagett for organizing unpermitted fitness swimming events in Kailua Bay. The Board voted to dismiss the fine upon receiving assurances from Pagett’s counsel, former Hawaii mayor William Kenoi that Pagett will apply for a DOBOR permit, including obtaining required insurance coverage, for all future marine events he plans. The Board also voted to confirm that DOBOR rules do authorize the boating division, acting in cooperation with the U.S. Coast Guard, to require and issue permits for marine events, including swim races.
