Honolulu – The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) is reminding Hawaii boaters they now have a year’s time to take a boating safety course approved by the National Association of Boating Law Administrators and the State of Hawaii.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie signed Hawaii Administrative Rule Chapter 13-244 on Oct. 30, 2012. This law provided for a two-year period before the rule could be enforced to allow the DLNR time to develop multiple compliance methods and give the boating community time to make use of those methods to become compliant.

“We will keep this heavily used facility open ramp open to accommodate local fishers who want to launch into the waters off western Maui during the holiday season when demand for access and certain fish stocks is high,” said William J. Aila, DLNR chairperson. “We have assurances from our Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation, the agency that maintains and manages the facility, that it is physically possible for the ramp and existing piers to remain open and usable until the repair project start date.”

The proposed amendments would prohibit the use of stand-up paddleboards in the Waiakea Public Fishing Area, limit boat fishing to only when the boat is anchored, and prohibit the possession or use of any net within the public fishing area. “These changes will help to maintain the focus on active pole and line fishing for which this area was designated,” said William J. Aila, Jr., DLNR chairperson.

“There has been a significant increase in the volume and types of recreational and commercial activities taking place in state waters since these boating rules were written and last revised nearly 20 years ago,” said William J. Aila, Jr., DLNR chairperson. “It’s time to update our rules so they are fair and equally applied to commercial operators operating everywhere in state waters. Since the use of our waters is changing, these rules allow us greater flexibility to adapt to those changes,” Aila said.

On August 29, 2013, Perry D. Rauch was charged and sentenced at Wahiawa District Court for violating Hawaii Administrative Rule (H.A.R.) 13-256-63(b)(1) that prohibits motorized vessels within Waimea Bay ocean waters, specifically within 1,837 feet from the shoreline. The judgment imposed fines and court fees total $855 and 6 months probation. Violator must remain arrest and conviction free for duration of the probation period.

HONOLULU -- Effective today, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) has closed Keehi Lagoon to commercial and recreational ocean activities – including fishing and canoe paddling – for public safety due to impacts of Monday’s molasses spill in nearby Honolulu harbor. Warning signs are being posted by DLNR and the Hawaii Department of Health.

HONOLULU -- The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) is reminding the public it will be enforcing all state rules this Labor Day weekend in state harbors, parks, beaches and marine waters in the interest of public safety and to protect natural and cultural resources.

The meeting will be held on from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 15, at Kalaheo Neighborhood Center, 4480 Papalina Road, in Kalaheo, Kauai.
