Boating & Ocean Recreations

(HONOLULU) – Certification permits, issued by the DLNR Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR), have long been required for surf and sailboard instructors, catamaran and canoe captains and second captains, and commercial motorboat operators, operating in Waikīkī.

(HONOLULU) – For nearly a decade, the DLNR Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) has grappled with amendments to Hawai‘i Administrative Rules (HAR) regarding commercial manta ray viewing operations at two locations in the West Hawai‘i Ocean Recreation Management Area (ORMA).

(HONOLULU) – This morning, a team of workers from the DLNR Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) removed a pair of faded signs from a post at the Maunalua Bay boat ramp. They then began putting up a pair of new signs – reminders of the important role of mano (sharks) in native Hawaiian culture, ocean health, and resiliency.

(HONOLULU) – Providing insights for future development proposals for the State’s largest small boat harbor is the purpose of the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor Vision Report, prepared by the University of Hawai‘i Community Design Center and the Department of Urban and Regional Planning.

(HONOLULU) - The DLNR Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) is asking boaters to help conserve water at harbors around Hawaiʻi.

(HONOLULU) – Citing lineage to various Polynesian monarchies did not keep 56-year-old Saute Sapolu of East O‘ahu from escaping a citation from the DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE), this morning.

(Ma‘alaea) – The first of six mobile biodiesel fueling stations in Hawai‘i opened this morning at Ma‘alaea Small Boat Harbor on Maui. Pacific Biodiesel installed and will operate the off-grid fueling station at the busy harbor.

(HONOLULU) – The State Board of Land and Natural Resources (BLNR) has approved a $30,000 fine for the owner of a boat who allowed the boat’s co-owner, her husband, and their child to live on the boat, moored in the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor, without required permitting.

(HONOLULU) – Fewer bags of stinky, foul trash have been ending up in the trap at the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor.  Last October, staff from 4ocean, an international public benefit corporation, began pulling multiple bags of rubbish floating into already contained areas at the trash catchment at the harbor’s mouth. Prior to publicity about the situation in February, the group pulled six bags from the trash boom every two weeks. While no bags were pulled in April, there is currently one bag in the boom.

(Kawaihae) – Additional renovations at the North Kawaihae Small Boat Harbor (SBH) will begin on March 22nd. During this phase (which includes demolition, grading and paving for the boat ramp and parking lot) of the project, both the boat ramp and parking lot will be closed for approximately 60 days. The boat ramp will remain open for non-trailered vessels such as canoes and kayaks that can be walked to the boat ramp, but it will be closed for trailered vessels.
