HONOLULU — The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of State Parks will be conducting repairs to the park’s water system from 7:30 a.m. to approximately mid-day near the park’s entrance. Doonwood Engineering will be replacing worn parts of a backflow preventer.

The park will remain open, but park users are notified that there will be no water for showers and restrooms will be closed until repairs are completed by about mid-day.

"We appreciate the patience and understanding of residents and visitors that may be affected by this project,” said Dan Quinn, State Parks administrator.

Improvement will include installation of a new 6-inch water main, new water meters, new lateral connections to adjacent lots, fire control laterals, repair of the affected roadways and related work. The project contractor is Goodfellow Bros., Inc., and the project cost is $2 million. Project completion is expected by March 2014.

State Parks and its consultants from Planning Solutions, are developing a master plan that will preserve the area’s natural wildland character and its significant archaeological and cultural features, protect the unique coastal resources, and determine the public’s recreational use of the area.

Division of State Parks crews were concluding a three-day enforcement and maintenance project to clear and remove large quantities of discarded camping gear and associated trash and garbage from illegal campsites throughout Kalalau valley. It costs about $20,000 to remove these items from Kalalau via helicopter sling loads.

Investigation is pending – pilot and two passengers uninjured, taken to hospital.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources today closed the Kalalau trail in Napali Coast State Wilderness Park, until further notice, due to a helicopter accident at Kalalau beach this afternoon. The park is closed in order to preserve the location of the accident pending investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.
