Kailua-Kona Pier & Bay Open House: July 28, 2026, 3:00pm to 5:30pm

The public is invited to join the Kailua Bay Advisory Working Group (KBAWG) for an “open house” on the Kailua-Kona Pier on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, from 3:00pm to 5:30pm.

Event Highlights:

  • ‘Ohana Water Activities: Outrigger canoe rides and guided snorkel tours will be offered free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis, with limited slots available (approximately 20-minute each session).  Signups will be handled onsite at the event.  Please be aware that these activities will be offered so long as weather conditions permit and may be cancelled in the event of inclement weather.
  • ‘Ike Kupuna and Fishing Talk Story: Learn the cultural history of Kailua-Kona Bay, as well as protocols, procedures, and best practices for sustainable and responsible fishing.
  • Pier & Bay Improvement Proposals: Learn about KBAWG’s vision and proposals for infrastructure, as well as the forthcoming Friends of Kailua Bay initiative.
  • Share Your Mana’o: KBAWG values community input and wants to hear any thoughts and suggestions to help make the Bay a more welcoming place to local users.

KBAWG was formed by the Department of Land and Natural Resources following the recommendations made by House Concurrent Resolution 191 from 2025, and includes representatives from local businesses, cultural practitioners, ocean users, and government agencies.  KBAWG’s Vision Statement: Rooted in shared understanding, education, and malama ‘aina, Kailua Bay stands as a living expression of collective stewardship, cultural continuity, and sustainable prosperity for present and future generations.
