If you have ever been on a fishing trip and saw floating derelict fishing gear in the ocean, did you pass it by? If the answer is yes, you may want to take note of this.
You can receive the following cash rewards for removing DFG and DFADs from our waters and bringing them to land.
Derelict Fishing Gear (DFG) Conglomerate
$1.00/ Dry Pound of Conglomerates & non-dFAD DFG
Drifting Fish Aggregating Device (dFAD) Raft
$1.50/ Dry Pound of Drifting Fish Aggregating Device (dFAD Raft and tail)
Drifting Fish Aggregating Device (dFAD) Buoy
$2.00/ Dry Pound of dFAD Buoy attached to dFAD Raft
$3.00/ Dry Pound of detached dFAD Buoy
In 2024, local fishers, longline and non-longline, turned in over 70,000 pounds of this kind of marine debris, redeeming trash for cash.
To be eligible for this program, you must own or operate a federally permitted Hawaiʻi longline vessel or be a licensed commercial fisher in the State of Hawaiʻi.
How to participate:
- Prior to removing DFG, register for the bounty program (with the exception of Hawaii Longline Association [HLA] members),
- DFG must be 100 pounds or larger (i.e. half of a standard pickup truck bed) with the exception of dFAD buoys,
- Collect photos of the DFG prior to removal,
- Record GPS Coordinates of the DFG,
- Record the removal date,
- DFG must be brought to land on O‘ahu,
- The fisher will remain responsible for safe delivery of the materials in compliance with law and communicate with HPU at the earliest moment by calling or texting 808-509-6571 so that HPU can prepare and coordinate for receiving the DFG.
