U.S. Coast Guard Reminds Operators that VHF Channel 16 is For Hailing and Distress Only

Posted on Mar 10, 2025 in Announcements

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) has seen an increase in vessel traffic at Ma’alaea Small Boat Harbor due to the closure of Lahaina Small Boat Harbor, and a corresponding increase of radio communications on VHF Channel 16 (156.8 MHz).  USCG reminds vessel operators that VHF Channel 16 is the international distress, safety, and calling frequency only.  Misuse of VHF Channel 16 for non-emergency purposes is a violation and grounds for fines, imprisonment, or both.

USCG therefore recommends VHF Channel 68 for vessel movement intentions in Ma’alaea Small Boat Harbor.
