KA‘IWA RIDGE “PILLBOX HIKE” TRAIL TO BE CLOSED
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 9 FOR ONE-DAY DEBRIS REMOVAL
HONOLULU — The Ka ‘Iwa Ridge or “Lanikai Pillbox” trail and pillboxes will be closed all day, on Sunday, September 9 for site clean-up and debris removal. Leftover debris from renovation work recently completed to the World-War II era observation platforms, along with blockades and signage put in place to aid renovation work, will be transported via helicopter lift from the site.
Signage and blockade removal is estimated to take almost the entire day. Some signage posts and observation deck barricades will be left to serve as future infrastructure for a sanctioned trail.
The entire trail will be closed to all users to ensure public safety and expedient job completion. A security guard will also be stationed to turn away potential hikers during operation hours.
Removal of the debris was coordinated by the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Engineering Division, and the renovation contractors, Tokunaga Masonry, Inc.
Best practices for graffiti removal are also being sought to complement the observation deck repairs.
Management planning of the Ka ‘Iwa Ridge Trail continues to progress as planning consultant firm, PBR, and the Division of Forestry and Wildlife continue to gather data on trail alignment and use.
