- 01/08/20-112 FOOT-LONG FISHING BOAT TO BE AUCTIONED OFF (Honolulu) – The owner of a 112 foot-long, twin-engine, fishing boat has one week to move his vessel before the DLNR Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) conducts a public auction of the boat.
- 01/07/20-FERAL CAT KILLS RARE HAWAIIAN PETREL CHICK INVOLVED IN SCIENTIFIC STUDYLihu‘e – The killing of an endangered Hawaiian Petrel chick involved in a tracking project highlights the continued threat of feral cats to native wildlife on Kaua῾i. The chick had been satellite tagged with two others as part of a research project by the Kaua῾i Endangered Seabird Recovery Project (KESRP) to locate the petrel’s first oceanic wintering grounds. When the tag continued to transmit from land over several weeks, researchers returned to the bird’s forest burrow in late November to find it had been killed by a cat. The kill was caught on a camera that was hidden to monitor the burrow.
- 01/02/20-SHORTER HUNTING SEASON FOR MOURNING DOVE(Honolulu) – The DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) announces a shorter hunting season for the mourning dove (Zenaida macroura) to meet current state regulations and to comply with federal mandates, including the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. The last day for hunting mourning dove is now January 12, 2020.

- 01/02/20-ANNUAL FIRST DAY HIKE GREETS THE NEW YEAR WITH MULTI-CULTURAL SIGHTS & SOUNDS(Honolulu) – First Day Hikes, in all 50 states started nine years ago as one way to encourage people to get out into nature by enjoying the enormous variety of state parks. Hawai‘i’s version of the First Day Hike, held on New Year’s Day, is unique for a number of reasons. It’s among the best attended, with as many as 700 people making the one-mile hike to the Makapu‘u overlook at the Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline on O‘ahu’s east side.
- 12/27/19-HUNTING AREA, ROAD, AND TRAIL IN KOKEE AREA CLOSED DUE TO SEARCH AND RECOVERY EFFORTS(Honolulu) – The DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) has closed a portion of Public Hunting Unit H in the Pu‘u ka Pele Forest Reserve on the west side of Kaua‘i until further notice. The closed portion of the hunting unit is bounded by Makaha Ridge Rd., Kokee Rd., Nualolo Trail and the coastline. Please note that Miloli‘i Road and Nu’alolo trail within this area are both closed. This is due to continuing search and recovery efforts associated with a helicopter crash in the Koke‘e area.
- 12/27/19-STATE CONSERVATION OFFICERS RING IN 2020 WITH NEW UNIFORMS(Honolulu) – For many years, officers of the DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) have worn blue uniforms, which in some cases made it difficult for people to tell them apart from county police officers. Beginning next year, DOCARE officers have a complement of new uniforms that better reflect their duties and responsibilities protecting and enforcing Hawai‘i’s natural and cultural resource laws.
- 12/26/19-WEST HAWAI’I STATE PARKS TO CLOSE EARLY FOR NEW YEAR’S EVE(Kailua-Kona) –On Tuesday December 31, 2019, the DLNR State Parks Division will be closing Hāpuna Beach State Recreation Area, Kīholo State Park Reserve and Kekaha Kai State Park (Mahai’ula and Kua Bay sections) early at 5 p.m. Closing of the parks early is to discourage fireworks. All fireworks are prohibited in state parks to protect the natural resources of the area.
- 12/19/19-NEW DAY AT HĀ’ENA & NĀPALI INCLUDES FEWER CITATIONS FOR ILLEGAL CAMPING(Nāpali Coast State Wilderness Park) – One of the sure signs of the new management paradigm for this state park and the adjoining Hā‘ena State Park on Kaua‘i is a truer wilderness experience for people hardy enough to hike 11-miles one-way to Kalalau Beach.
- 12/15/19-WAHI PANA ESSAY CONTEST FOR HAWAII HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS(Honolulu) – High school students across Hawai‘i are encouraged to write about a wahi pana, (a pulsing place) special to them, in preparation for the 50th anniversary of International Earth Day on April 22, 2020. The contest is presented by the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW).
