- 02/25/16 – DOCARE Officers Join Federal Partners For Ocean Education Event; Weekend Event Focuses on Marine Protected Species & Fishing Rules(Kahului, Maui) - DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) officers will be at two Maui boat ramps this weekend to help teach ocean users about humpback whales, monk seals, sea turtles, and other marine protected species.
- 02/20/16 – Fishing Boat From Japan Tsunami Makes Five Thousand Mile, Four Year-Long Journey To Hawaii, Daini Katsu Returns to Miyagi Prefecture(HONOLULU) – The 20-foot long Daini Katsu Maru is one of the more than four dozen small fishing boats that have washed ashore in whole, or in part, in Hawaii following the devastating March 11, 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami. This boat was adrift in the vast Pacific Ocean for more thanfour years before finally coming ashore at Alan Davis Beach on Oahu’s eastern shore on April 22, 2015. Designated as JTMD (for “Japan tsunami marine debris”) it was confirmed as originating from Ogatsu-town, Miyagi Prefecture, during the 2011 tsunami using the identification on its hull through coordinated efforts by the Japan Consulate and the Government of Japan.
- 02/20/16 – Veteran Forestry and Wildlife Manager Appointed to Division’s Top Job; David Smith to Lead DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife(HONOLULU) – The Oahu Branch Chief for the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) has been promoted to become DOFAW Administrator. David Smith is a veteran state wildlife biologist and forestry and wildlife manager with 28 years of experience.
- 02/19/16 – DLNR To Hold Public Hearing On Nāpu‘u Conservation ProjectHILO, HAWAII -- The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), pursuant to Chapter 195D, Hawaiʻi Revised Statutes, will hold a public hearing to receive testimony on the Nāpu‘u Conservation Project Draft Habitat Conservation Plan for Game Management at Pu‘u Wa‘awa‘a and Pu‘u Anahulu.
- 02/18/16 – Task Force Formed To Analyze DLNR Revocable Permits, Panel Tasked With Creating Best Practices(HONOLULU) – A task force of eight has been appointed by DLNR Chair Suzanne Case to review the department’s revocable permit process, permit status, and to recommend changes to ensure the process serves the public trust and provides transparency, inclusiveness and consistency.
- 02/17/16 – Backpackers Stranded By Flooded Hanakapiai Stream Back To Safety, Kalalau Trail on Kauai Now Open Again(Lihue) - At least a dozen Kalalau Trail backpackers were forced to spend an extra night camping in the Napali Coast State Wilderness Park, after Hanakapiai Stream flooded yesterday afternoon.
- 02/17/16 – State and County Officials Seek Help in Big Island Wildfires(HILO) - A series of wildfires in the Puuanahulu area of Hawaii Island over the past week have prompted fire and police officials to ask people using the region to report any suspicious activity.
- 02/16/16 – Talk Story Sessions Set for Rodent and Mongoose Control and Eradication Methods to Protect Native HabitatsThe U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) and Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) will hold a series of talk story sessions about methods to control and eradicate invasive rodents and mongooses to protect native species in Hawaii. The agencies are co-leads in developing a draft programmatic environmental impact statement, which will analyze the impacts of and alternatives to controlling these invasive animals for the protection of native wildlife, plants, and habitats that support them.
- 02/13/16 – Hawaii’s First Workshop on Sea Level Rise Explores Risks and Adaptation Strategies(HONOLULU) – Recognizing that Hawaii is the only island state in the U.S. and that our islands will likely be the first and most dramatically impacted by rising ocean levels, the State Interagency Climate Change Adaptation Committee (ICAC), this week held it’s first-ever sea level rise vulnerability and adaptation workshop.
- 02/12/16 – Division Of Forestry And Wildlife Again Receives Major Federal Grant(HONOLULU) – U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced today that the State of Hawaii Dept. of Land and Natural Resources is the recipient of more than $485,000 as part of the Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP). The program’s focus is on public-private partnerships that enable private companies, land owners, local communities and other non-government partners to deliver innovative watershed-scale projects to keep lands resilient, improve water quality and quantity, wildlife habitat, and to promote economic growth in a variety of industries. This award is the second year of the RCPP, and the second year Hawaii’s DLNR has received funding for watershed forest protection.
