LIHUE – It’s fall in Hawaii, and time again to watch out for the “fallout”of young seabirds. This time of year, Kauai’s threatened and endangered native Hawaiian seabirds become disoriented by artificial lights during their maiden flights from the mountains to the sea.

HALEAKALÂ, MAUI –The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) has included a recent 3,721-acre addition to The Nature Conservancy’s (TNC) Waikamoi Preserve into the State’s Natural Area Partnership Program (NAPP). The DLNR’s Division of Forestry and Wildlife offers the program to encourage partnerships for conservation across landowner boundaries. There are over 30,000 acres currently enrolled in the program statewide. The innovative partnership program provides State funds on a two-for-one basis with private funds to protect the privately owned East Maui forest preserve.

HONOLULU –The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), in collaboration with East Honolulu’s Holy Nativity School, announces a free Project Learning Tree (PLT) Pre-K-6 workshop open to all O‘ahu educators. The workshop will take place Sept. 27, 2014, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Holy Nativity School in ‘Aina Haina.

HONOLULU -- The Department of Land and Natural Resources today reopened a segment of the Makiki Valley hiking trail following completion and inspection of work to mitigate rock hazards exposed by a landslide in early July.

HILO -- The Office of Hawaiian Affairs and Department of Land and Natural Resources announce the immediate closure of Wao Kele o Puna Forest Reserve, until further notice, due to the hazards associated with the June 27 lava flow. Wao Kele o Puna is owned by OHA and managed by DLNR.

LIHUE – State and County officials will conduct a communications exercise on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Nounou Forest Reserve, near Kapaa. The exercise involves the Kauai Police and Fire Departments, Kauai County Civil Defense and the Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement. They will be testing a portable radio repeater to determine how large of a coverage area they can get from the specific location. The day exercise will lead to the closure of the Nounou mountain trail shelter in the Nounou Forest Reserve.

HONOLULU -- The Department of Land and Natural Resources has closed a portion of the Makiki Valley hiking trail during weekday hours for approximately three weeks to carry out work to mitigate rock hazards exposed by a landslide in early July.

HONOLULU—The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of Forestry and Wildlife is seeking to hire two planners to conduct outreach and provide technical assistance to new landowners participating in its Hawai‘i Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) .

HILO —The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of Forestry and Wildlife has closed the Puna hiking trail until further notice, due to severe tree fall caused by Hurricane Iselle. These downed trees are blocking access to Haena (Shipman) beach in the South Hilo area.

HILO —The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) is issuing permits for control of feral goats in the makai portion —and feral goat and feral sheep in the mauka portion —of the Pu‘u Wa‘awa‘a (PWW) Forest Reserve, pursuant to Title 13, Chapter 123, “Rules Regulating Game Mammal Hunting,”䅉-123-9, “Nuisance or crop damage.” These programs will be conducted on weekends only, in two phases. Phase 1 will begin Sept. 20, 2014 - Oct. 19, 2014. Phase 2 will begin Feb. 7, 2015 - Mar. 15, 2015.
