Division of State Parks crews were concluding a three-day enforcement and maintenance project to clear and remove large quantities of discarded camping gear and associated trash and garbage from illegal campsites throughout Kalalau valley. It costs about $20,000 to remove these items from Kalalau via helicopter sling loads.

HONOLULU -- Effective today, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) has closed Keehi Lagoon to commercial and recreational ocean activities – including fishing and canoe paddling – for public safety due to impacts of Monday’s molasses spill in nearby Honolulu harbor. Warning signs are being posted by DLNR and the Hawaii Department of Health.

Investigation is pending – pilot and two passengers uninjured, taken to hospital.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources today closed the Kalalau trail in Napali Coast State Wilderness Park, until further notice, due to a helicopter accident at Kalalau beach this afternoon. The park is closed in order to preserve the location of the accident pending investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.

“The new fisheries enforcement unit aims to increase public awareness about the importance of ocean conservation and pono fishing activities on Maui. It also sends a message that we are serious about protecting the marine resources of Maui,” said William J. Aila, Jr., DLNR chairperson.

“Protecting threatened and endangered species through collaborative approaches like this one builds the collective capacity of resource managers to understand the scope of challenges facing Hawaii’s rare species and leverages our finances to facilitate greater impact on the ground,” said William J. Aila Jr., DLNR Chairperson. “The Snail Extinction Prevention Program (SEPP) is a new program under the DLNR. In their work, SEPP and partners honor what is today a rarely seen species and protect not only our natural resources, but our culture.”
