- 08/30/17 – Second Application of Rodenticide On Lehua Island Complete, Visual Observations Show No Impact to Marine Resources(Lihu‘e, Kaua‘i) – The second scheduled aerial application of a rodenticide to eliminate invasive rats from the State Seabird Sanctuary on Lehua Island was successfully completed today. As with the first helicopter application on August 23rd, this second application began at first light and was complete in about three hours.
- 08/28/17 – Next Phase of Rockfall Mitigation Work To Start On Diamond Head(Honolulu) – The final stage of work to remove rockfall hazards along the exterior and interior slopes of the iconic Diamond Head State Monument will begin September 18, 2017. This phase will focus on the summit hiking trail, and is expected to be completed by early December 2017.
- 08/23/17 – Lehua Restoration Operation To Rid Island of Rats Begins(HONOLULU) – Today, hope reigns for Lehua Island, as an operation commenced to make the island’s threatened wildlife safe from introduced, damaging, invasive rats. DLNR and its partners carried out carefully made plans to remove the invasive rats with support from Native Hawaiian and local communities. Dozens of Federal and State permits affirming that the operation poses very little risk to people, marine mammals, fish, sea turtles, birds, or other wildlife were secured in advance of the operation.
- 08/14/17 – DLNR Holds Public Information Meetings On Big Island About Sea Level Rise Vulnerability and AdaptationHONOLULU -- The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will be holding two public information meetings on Hawaii island this month on sea level rise vulnerability and adaptation. The first meeting will take place in Hilo this week on Thursday, August 17, 2017, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Aupuni Center Conference Room, located at 101 Pauahi Street.
- 08/12/17 – Hawaiian Monk Seal ‘KAIMANA’ Successfully Released On O‘ahu(Honolulu) – The now famous Hawaiian monk seal pup who spent the past 44 days on busy Kaimana Beach in Waikiki was successfully relocated by a team of expert handlers and veterinarians this morning. Named ‘Kaimana’, the young seal weaned from her mother ‘Rocky’ midday Friday.
- 08/11/17 – Update On Hawaiian Monk Seal Pup ‘Kaimana’(Honolulu) - For several hours this afternoon, ‘Rocky’ the mother of the Hawaiian monk seal pup ‘Kaimana’ has not been spotted at Kaimana Beach. This may indicate that Rocky has weaned her pup, but it’s too soon to know for sure.
- 05/10/17 – Global Survey Leads to Development of Hawai‘i Coral Plan, DLNR Recovery Plan Addresses Coral Bleaching Recovery Management(Honolulu) – Two successive summers of serious coral bleaching in waters around the main Hawaiian Islands and in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands has led to the development of the first-ever Hawai‘i Coral Bleaching Recovery Plan.
- 05/09/17 – Citizen Tips and Assistance Lead to Suspect in Mauna Kea Graffiti Case, Hawai‘i Island Woman Issued Criminal Citation(Hilo) - Assistance provided by the Native Hawaiian community allowed officers from the Hawai‘i Branch of the DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) to make contact with a suspect in the recent case of graffiti damage found at the Mauna Kea Ice Age Natural Area Reserve (NAR). As a result of this contact and investigation, Hope Cermelj of Kalapana, Hawai‘i was issued a citation for violating Rule 13-209-4 (3), Prohibited Activities within a Natural Area Reserve. Cermelj will be required to appear in Hilo District Court.
- 05/08/17 – Mau‘i’s Most Popular Trail Gets Safety and Conservation Upgrades(Kahului, Mau‘i) - On one side of the Waihe‘e Ridge Trail, hikers look deep into the Waihe‘e Gorge. On the other, they look across Makamakaole Gulch and out into the shimmering Pacific Ocean. On a clear day, yet another view is across the entire central plain of Maui all the way to the top of Haleakala. This challenging, but scenic trail is considered the most popular path on Mau‘i in the State’s Nā Ala Hele Trail and Access Program.
- 05/07/17 – Rocks Within Historic Mauna Kea Ice Age Natural Area Reserve Found Damaged By Graffiti(Hilo)--The Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) is requesting the public's assistance in providing information related to a criminal investigation of Prohibited Activities in a Natural Area Reserve (NAR).
