LIHUE – It’s fall in Hawaii, and time again to watch out for the “fallout”of young seabirds. This time of year, Kauai’s threatened and endangered native Hawaiian seabirds become disoriented by artificial lights during their maiden flights from the mountains to the sea.

HALEAKALÂ, MAUI –The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) has included a recent 3,721-acre addition to The Nature Conservancy’s (TNC) Waikamoi Preserve into the State’s Natural Area Partnership Program (NAPP). The DLNR’s Division of Forestry and Wildlife offers the program to encourage partnerships for conservation across landowner boundaries. There are over 30,000 acres currently enrolled in the program statewide. The innovative partnership program provides State funds on a two-for-one basis with private funds to protect the privately owned East Maui forest preserve.

ʻIAO, MAUI -- On Monday, Oct. 13, 2014 at 9 a.m., Wailuku Water Company will begin releasing 10 million gallons of water per day into ʻIao Stream pursuant to the April 2014 Settlement Agreement in the Na Wai ‘Eha Contested Case. The Agreement involved Hui o Na Wai ‘Eha, Maui Tomorrow Foundation, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar Company, Wailuku Water Company, the Maui County Department of Water Supply, and the State Commission on Water Resource Management.

HONOLULU – Higher than normal sea surface temperatures (SSTs) have resulted in above-normal levels of coral bleaching at numerous near-shore locations on Oahu. This is especially severe along the windward coastline. Reports from ocean users and Eyes of the Reef Network (eorhawaii.org) volunteers prompted a response from the Dept. of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) Coral Rapid Response Team.

HONOLULU – The Society for Hawaiian Archaeology (SHA) will present its annual Archaeology Week Conference from Oct. 10 to 12 in Hilo, providing an opportunity for professionals and other interested individuals to explore and experience Hawaiian archaeology. Participants will meet to further the SHA’s goals of directing efforts into more scientific channels and encourage the publication of results; advocating and assisting in the conservation of archaeological data; and discouraging unethical commercialism in the archaeological field and work for its elimination.
