A 10-month-old female Hawaiian monk seal was moved today from the Lihi canal at Kapa‘a to a beach on Kaua‘i’s west side. RH92 had been frequenting the canal in recent weeks, likely attracted by discarded fish scraps. A team from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s, National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries) translocated the seal and fitted her with a satellite tag (to track her movements) before she was released back into the wild.
The Coast Guard is establishing a temporary safety zone for the navigable waters surrounding the Kilauea Volcano active lava flow entry into the Pacific Ocean on the southeast side of the Big Island, Hawai’i, Tuesday.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife will briefly close the Keanae Arboretum for two days, on Wednesday, March 29 and Thursday, March 30, 2017. This closure will allow a contractor to safely remove trees that recently fell across the trail within the arboretum. The arboretum will reopen on Friday March 31.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources’ (DLNR) Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service, is now accepting applications for vacant seats on the Laupāhoehoe Advisory Council (LAC) and the Pu‘u Wa‘awa‘a Advisory Council (PAC) on Hawai‘i island. Both forest areas are part of the Hawaii Experimental Tropical Forest. DOFAW works with the Forest Service to do research in these areas.
Traffic along Diamond Head road and Beach Road may experience delays starting next week while a contractor carries out work to remove rockfall hazards along the makai side of Diamond Head crater. The purpose of this annual survey is to assist in improving DLNR’s game management in state public hunting areas. DOFAW manages over one million acres of state land for wildlife-dependent recreation and conservation. Its Hawaii game management program provides opportunities for recreational and subsistence hunting of 16 species of game birds and 6 species of game mammals.
A project to replace three (3) bridges along the Mohihi-Camp 10 Access Road in the Kokee State Park has finished two months ahead of schedule. The road and bridges will reopen for public use by four-wheel drive vehicles on Friday March 24, 2017
