Closure: Trail

The popular Makapu‘u Lighthouse road/trail and parking lot in the Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline, will be closed for one day, Thursday, Sept. 21, 2017, while the DLNR Division of State Parks’ contractor stripes the parking stalls. This step will complete the maintenance work in the parking lot. The trail will reopen the next day.

The final stage of work to remove rockfall hazards along the exterior and interior slopes of the iconic Diamond Head State Monument will begin September 18, 2017. This phase will focus on the summit hiking trail, and is expected to be completed by early December 2017

The popular Makapu‘u Lighthouse trail and parking lot will be closed from Wednesday September 13 through Friday September 15. The closure is necessary while a weather-resistant protective slurry seal coat is applied on the asphalt pavement of the park entry road and parking lot. The sealant requires time to cure and vehicles must stay off the pavement during this time.

Department of Land and Natural Resources Chair Suzanne Case signed an order today, temporarily closing certain State unencumbered lands adjacent to Haleakala National Park land on Maui. Hawai‘i State Administrative Rules (HAR 13-221-4) allow the DLNR Chair to close or restrict public usage for the purposes of safe transit and personal safety.

‘Iao Valley State Monument is now not expected to reopen until early August 2017, as the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) continues work to complete repairs to make the park safe for public visitation following major flooding and damage in late 2016. It remains closed until further notice for public safety reasons.

The main parking lot at Ha‘ena State Park will be closed all day on Friday, May 19 to complete an ongoing maintenance project, as well as tree trimming and removal of ironwood trees adjacent to the parking lot.

Seventeen people were arrested at the Kalalau Section of the Napali Coast State Wilderness Park, during a pair of law enforcement sweeps earlier this week. Officers from the DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) arrested people without valid permits for being in a closed area. They believe among the 17, were three people who’d been illegally residing in Kalalau Valley for long periods of time.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife will briefly close the Keanae Arboretum for two days, on Wednesday, March 29 and Thursday, March 30, 2017. This closure will allow a contractor to safely remove trees that recently fell across the trail within the arboretum. The arboretum will reopen on Friday March 31.

The popular 2.5 mile Waihe‘e ridge trail that climbs the windward slope of the west Maui mountains is again closed through April 7 to allow completion of improvements for increased public safety through surface improvements, drainage upgrades, and vegetative management.

Nearly every time Larry Pacheco of the DLNR Division of State Parks arrives at one of the locked gates leading into ‘Iao Valley, he ends up informing people who are walking up the road…ignoring multiple signs that indicate both ‘Iao Valley State Monument and Maui County’s Kepaniwai Park are closed.
