(HONOLULU) – Twenty years in the making, the Hāʻena communities’ efforts to fully participate in the protection and management of Hāʻena State Park took another evolutionary step today. The Board of Land and Natural Resources (BLNR) approved a one-year revocable permit (RP) for the non-profit Hui Maka’āinana o Makana to oversee and manage a Park reservation system, including collecting both parking and entry fees as well as an integrated shuttle system that will reduce the number of cars that enter the Park each day. The hui will also manage the cultural landscape of the park.
(HONOLULU) – Today, the Board of Land and Natural Resources by a three-to-three tie reached an impasse in a decision to accept or reject the Revised Final Environmental Impact Statement (RFEIS) submitted by seven aquarium fish collectors for the West Hawai‘i Regional Fishery Management Area (WHRFMA). The law provides a 30-day time-period in which the board must reach a decision.
(HONOLULU) – The State is investigating the circumstances associated with what is described as significant damage to corals and live rock near the entrance channel to Honolulu Harbor. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contracted dredging work to the Healy Tibbets Corporation. It is alleged the contractor dragged the dredging platform’s anchor and cable across coral colonies and deposited dredged material on corals.
(HONOLULU) – Today, the state Board of Land and Natural Resources fined the owners of dams on O‘ahu and Hawai‘i Island for not addressing risks associated with major deficiencies to dam structures. The dams/reservoirs fined are Wahiawa on O'ahu and Keaīwa on Hawai'i.
(HONOLULU) – In a sweeping and complex, 46-page-long ruling, First Circuit Court Judge Jeffrey P. Crabtree ruled in favor of the Board of Land and Natural Resources (BLNR), Maui County, Alexander and Baldwin, and East Maui Irrigation, in a case brought by the Sierra Club regarding water diversions from east Maui streams. The BLNR allocates available water for off-stream uses.
(HONOLULU) – Today, the Board of Land and Natural Resources (BLNR) voted unanimously to fine two Hawai‘i island aquarium fishers $272,000 in civil fines for multiple violations of Hawai‘i Administrative Rules (HAR) related to an illegal aquarium fishing incident in Kona in 2020.
