HILO, HI – Anyone driving by an open field on the edge of downtown Hilo recently may have spotted several dozen people gathered around holes marked with yellow flags. This was the field exercise for an Archaeological Violation Class sponsored by the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) State Historic Preservation Division (SHPD). Combining two and a half days of classroom instruction, police officers from state and federal agencies, prosecutors and archaeologists participated in the field exercise to practice and test their crime scene investigation skills. The class was taught by Archaeological Damage Investigation and Assessment, a Missoula, MT-based company.

HONOLULU – The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of State Parks has entered into a pilot agreement with Discover Hidden Hawai‘i Tours (DHT) to make available for public use the historic Nutridge House property on the grounds of Pu‘u ‘Ualaka‘a State Wayside, which is located off Round Top Drive and overlooks urban Honolulu in Makiki. Rental availability for functions will help to generate funds to benefit the continued maintenance and preservation of the historic site.

KAHULUI -- The Board of Land and Natural Resources (BLNR) today authorized the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) to seek bids to conduct an archaeological inventory survey (AIS) and environmental review (EA) necessary to explore a proposed land exchange agreement between the state and Haleakala Ranch that that the department believes will ensure public access to a disputed hiking trail, and create a new access route to two large forest reserves on the leeward slope of Haleakala.

HONOLULU -- The Hawaii Heritage Center, in cooperation with the State Historic Preservation Division within the Department of Land and Natural Resources, has been producing an historic sites calendar since 1984. Their 2014 calendar, titled the “Working Hands of the Makaainana,” addresses the theme of Hawaiian technology and innovation. The beautiful calendar was designed by Viki Nasu Design Group, with Ric Noyle providing magnificent photographs of island scenes rarely viewed by much of the public.

"We appreciate the patience and understanding of residents and visitors that may be affected by this project,” said Dan Quinn, State Parks administrator.
