(Honolulu)-Four of the 12 Bottomfish Restricted Fishing Areas (BRFAs) around the state are scheduled to re-open to Deep-7 bottomfish fishing on July 1, 2019.  They include BRFA C (Makahū‘ena, Kaua‘i), BRFA F (Penguin Banks), BRFA J (Mokumana-Umalei Pt, Maui), and BRFA L (Leleiwi Pt, Hawai‘i Island). 

(Hilo) – Wailoa State Recreation Area in Hilo is unique among Hawai‘i State Parks given it’s one of a few parks in an urban setting, right on the edge of downtown Hilo. Honolulu) –  While it’s technically possible to remove sand and create a channel to the Pohoiki Small Boat Ramp on Hawai‘i Island’s lower Puna coast, an engineering study commissioned by the DLNR Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) finds that it would be very expensive and full of uncertainties associated with sand movement and costal processes continuing in and around Pohoiki Bay.

(Honolulu) – This morning a small team from the DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) carefully ‘planted’ extremely rare, endemic Porites duerdeni coral onto a reef in Kaneohe Bay just off Coconut Island, home of the University of Hawai‘i’s, Hawai‘i Institute of Marine Biology.  This species of coral was likely wiped out during major bleaching events in 2015 and 2016 and previously was thought to grow in the bay as one of the few places in the world where it’s found.

(Hāʻena, Kaua‘i) – The clouds broke, and the rain stopped as 200 Hāʻena and Wainiha residents gathered next to a lo‘i in Hāʻena State Park on Kaua‘i’s north shore on Wednesday for a blessing called “Dawning of a New Day for Hāʻena.” The blessing, which included remarks from Governor David Ige, DLNR Chair Suzanne Case, local community members and a host of lawmakers and state leaders precedes the reopening of Kūhiō Highway and Hāʻena State Park, the gateway to the famed Kalalau Trail in the Nāpali Coast State Wilderness Park.

(Honolulu) – A nationally acclaimed program that teaches women a wide variety of outdoor skills is coming to Hawai‘I for the first-time ever this fall. The DLNR Hunter Education Program and the Safari Club International-Hawai‘i Chapter are hosting the inaugural Becoming an Outdoors Woman (BOW) workshop, September 6-8, 2019 at the Gilbert Kahele Recreation Area on Hawai‘i Island.

(Lahaina) – When a biologist who was looking for native snails noticed signs of caterpillars feeding on māmaki in Olowalu, he came across a new invasive species. It was a kind of caterpillar he had never seen before; the Arcte coerula (Ramie moth).
