HILO, Hawai‘i – The Kaʻohe Game Management Area (GMA) on Hawai‘i Island will open to game mammal hunting with a muzzleloader or shotgun (with slug) on Thursday, July 3, 2025. HILO, Hawaiʻi – Animal control activities targeting feral goats, feral sheep and mouflon/feral sheep hybrids are scheduled for July 1-2, 2025 on Hawaiʻi Island. The DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) will conduct the operations using ground-based and aerial methods.

HONOLULU – As the summer fun season heats up, a lot of young people and visitors will head toward the rocky shorelines and cliffs on the east side of Maunalua Bay for ocean play. So will first responders, to rescue them.
HILO, Hawaiʻi – Threats to Hawaiʻi’s endangered wildlife usually come in the form of habitat loss and degradation, disease, or predators. Recent incidents on Hawai‘i Island involving the ‘io, or Hawaiian hawk, shed light on another hazard: human interactions. Last month, a Mountain View community member found an emaciated ‘io on her property. It was missing the upper portion of its beak. This was reported to the Hawai‘i Wildlife Center (HWC) which contacted the DLNR Divisions of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) and Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW).
