(HONOLULU) – The earnest efforts by hundreds of school children, their teachers, state lawmakers, and conservationists resulted in Gov. Ige signing SB2059 into law today, during a ceremony at Washington Place.

(Waialea Bay Marine Life Conservation District) – Conditions to see coral spawning on Tuesday, were near perfect at this Hawai‘i Island, bay. Aquatic biologist Chris Teague, with the DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR), begins watching for spawning just after dawn. 

(Pololū Valley, Hawai‘i Island) – “Everyone is recognizing the overuse of Pololū and the community wanting to do something about it,” begins Jackson Bauer.

(HONOLULU) – Significant federal dollars are headed to Hawai‘i to help address the extinction crisis facing at least four species of native Hawaiian birds. An unprecedented $14 million for Hawai‘i ecosystem restoration is included in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, described as a major investment in the conservation and stewardship of America’s public lands.

(HONOLULU) – The Board of Land and Natural Resources (BLNR) has approved an extension, requested by the owners of the Wahiawa Dam on O‘ahu, to design and implement improvements to the dam’s spillway and embankment structure.

(KAILUA-KONA) – It’s a rite of Spring in the coastal waters on Hawai‘i Island, and across the Hawaiian archipelago, and the time to let coral colonies rest during their short spawning windows.  Parking at the Waialea Bay Marine Life Conservation District (MLCD) will be closed during the mornings of May 17, 18, and 19 to allow spawning and the production of new keiki offspring. 

(HONOLULU) – An estimated 40% of the people who showed up at Diamond Head State Monument early this morning did not have reservations. Today, is the first of a new “adaptive management” plan to improve visitor experiences at one of O‘ahu’s most popular natural attractions.

(HONOLULU) - The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) believes HB2024 CD1 is well-intentioned but leaves significant gaps that could result in worse management of Mauna Kea’s natural and cultural resources.

(HONOLULU) – Fewer bags of stinky, foul trash have been ending up in the trap at the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor.  Last October, staff from 4ocean, an international public benefit corporation, began pulling multiple bags of rubbish floating into already contained areas at the trash catchment at the harbor’s mouth. Prior to publicity about the situation in February, the group pulled six bags from the trash boom every two weeks. While no bags were pulled in April, there is currently one bag in the boom.

(HONOLULU) – Beginning May 1, 2022, all real estate transactions conducted in Hawai‘i must include disclosures about the risk of sea level rise (SLR) to the property. The mandate, enacted in 2021, requires disclosure about sea level rise, up to and including 3.2 feet.
